Lean into Life Community Coach Training

The Big Happiness Experiment CIC are delighted to announce the launch of the Lean into Life Community Coach Training Programme. This innovative project has been designed specifically to support health inequalities within the Black Country Healthcare NHS..

Our mission is to train 60 Lean into Life Community Coaches over the next 12 months. This training will provide the skillsets, knowledge, and support to deliver the Lean into Life Mental & Emotional Health Education Programme to non-English speaking individuals within their own communities and cultures.

This extensive training programme will be available to staff from within NHS departments, existing community organisations, and charities. It will also offer individuals a rare opportunity to learn a skillset that can be shared within the community, to those people who cannot access existing services because of language and culture barriers. This training is being made available to individuals who are passionate about making a difference to the mental and emotional health of people within their own community, irrespective of language and culture.

Applications are now open for this Lean into Life Community Coach Programme and more information is listed below.

Applications are now open for this Lean into Life Community Coach Programme and more information on criteria is listed below.

Who is eligible to apply for this training?

This unique training is being offered to suitable candidates within the Black Country conurbation to empower them (once trained and certified) to deliver the Lean into Life Programme within their own community. This will greatly enhance the services currently available to all communities, irrespective of language and culture.

There are no strict criteria for applicants to this training, apart from the fact that they need to be bilingual; ie; fluent in English and the language of the community they are looking to support. Everyone who applies will be individually, and personally assessed. Don’t assume that certain qualifications are required in order to apply, it is in fact, the individual qualities and passion to make a difference to the mental and emotional health of the community that we are most interested in!

How do I apply?

The first stage of application is to complete the Initial Enquiry Formthat can be found below.

Once your application has been received, you will then be sent a confirmation email to confirm that your application is under review.

This will be followed up within 48 hrs (usually before) with a further email that will either (a) request an informal telephone interview to proceed to the next stage or (b) confirm the reason why your application was not successful.

Why was this unique training opportunity created?

The Big Happiness Experiment CIC currently delivers a variety of community-based projects throughout the Midland’s region. One of these programmes is Project Me, which is a unique and highly successful programme delivering mental health coaching to residents of Walsall (and the surrounding areas), who are suffering from anxiety, depression, chronic stress, burnout, low levels of confidence, and a lack of self-esteem. Project Me provides a unique framework of education, practical tools, and strategies for those people struggling to cope with their current mental and emotional states. It equips participants with knowledge and tools in order that they can develop healthy attitudes towards mental health and greater emotional resilience, whilst strengthening their capacities to manage stress, anxiety, depression, and other mental health issues. Project Me started in August 2021 with the support of the National Lottery Community Fund.

It was quickly identified that a barrier existed for non-English speaking individuals to access this unique programme, so as an organisation we (The Big Happiness Experiment) were passionate about finding a solution to this inequality, and started to look at ways in which we could offer a programme similar to Project Me that could be accessed by ALL communities. This would then offer an opportunity for non-English speaking community members to have access to this unique provision within their own area.

After consultations with various organisations within the area and a funding contract with the Black Country & West Birmingham NHS (as part of the Health Inequalities initiative), The Lean into Life Community Coach ‘train the trainer’ programme was born!

How will this programme help?

This initiative will ensure that a unique Mental & Emotional Health Education & Coaching programme can be integrated into the very heart of the community, and be available to ALL ethnicities, breaking down the barriers of language and culture. The training will ensure that all certified coaches, i.e.; registered Lean into Life Community Coaches will be equipped with the knowledge, resources, and an extensive toolkit, that will empower them to deliver a Six Week Lean into Life Group Programme. As well as this programme being delivered in the community’s language, it can also be adapted to be more culturally appropriate. All coaches will be encouraged to think outside the box, finding creative ways to expand the programme, such as offering mini workshops, talks, day events, etc. This will ensure that this life changing material can be delivered by bilingual coaches in a myriad of ways, in order to support local communities.

Ultimately, this training programme will help communities across the breadth of the Black Country to access an innovative and revolutionary mental & emotional health programme that is culturally appropriate and available in the very heart of their community.

How many Lean into Life Community Coaches will there be?

It is our aim to train 60 Lean into Life Coaches in the period between September 2022 and August 2023. The training is taking place in three ‘waves’ of 20 trainees.

On each cohort of training there will be 20 places available for bilingual trainers from ALL ethnic groups.

The Ripple Effect

The knowledge, tools, and techniques taught within this comprehensive training package will provide all Lean into Life Community Coaches with a skillset that has the potential to make a huge difference to individuals within their community. From our many years of experience we know that this positive impact will naturally and organically be spread further afield. The community members who attend the six-week courses, day events, and workshops etc, can they themselves become ‘Community Champions’, passing this knowledge on to their family and friends, and providing ongoing peer to peer support.

How much does this training cost?

Lean into Life Community Coach training is completely free, the funds to cover this training have been provided by Black Country & West Birmingham NHS as part of the Health Inequalities initiative. However, once trained all Lean into Life Community Coaches will have to fund the delivery of their individual programmes using their own budget. Costs that might be incurred will include room hire, resource printing, workshop materials, etc. We envisage that many existing service providers and organisations will utilise this training to extend the current services that they provide.

What is the training schedule and where does the training take place?

All training will be provided by The Big Happiness Experiment. Please see HERE for more details.

The training will take place over eight weeks and will be a comprehensive blend of ‘in person’ training days, online zoom sessions, and a fully functional on-line training portal that is brimming with video lessons and resources. There will be three one day ‘in person’ training events alongside weekly 2-hour virtual group sessions, weekly assignments, a bespoke online portal, and 1:1 support via text and email. This support package will ensure that this unique Mental Health Coaching programme can be made available in the very heart of the community. During the eight-week training programme, these Lean into Life Coaches will be trained on all educational aspects of this project, alongside project development, in order that they can successfully deliver the programme within the community.

All in person training days (three in total over eight weeks) will be taking place at the conference room located at the rear of The Table coffee shop. The Table (formally The Vine) is located on 33, Lower Hall Lane, Walsall, WS1 1RR. Paid parking is available opposite on the Mountrath Street car park. (£2-50 all day).
